This was a great read but I immediately found #1 to be false or misleading. There’s no reason you can’t use grey text on coloured backgrounds… the key here is to test for accessibility and ensure the contrast is acceptable.

You don’t need to limit your designs based on these facts. Absolute white and absolute black are often steered clear of as well due to harshness.
